What I Like

I love Broadway, classical and church music. I like the lesser known pieces, especially the many wonderful show tunes that never made it as popular hits, usually because they were too tightly woven into the context of the shows they are from. I also like songs that are deeply confessional, the ones where the character reveals something raw about himself. Lost in the Stars, for example, where the old preacher confesses to a child that his faith in God has been shaken as a result of violent events in his South African village. This Nearly Was Mine from South Pacific has revelation in it, too. I hear Emile confessing that the loss of Nellie hasn't just rattled him, but has even caused him to question his sanity. "So clear and deep are my fancies of things I wish were true, I keep remembering evenings I wish I'd spent with you." I always hear a bit of fear creeping into Emile's voice as he sings those words. He is a man obsessed--and he knows it.
